Information Collection and Use

Information Collection

Oak Bay Marine Group is the sole owner of the information collected on this Web site. Oak Bay Marine Group collects information from our users at several different points on our Web site.

Information Request Forms

We request information from the user on our information request forms. A user must provide contact information (such as name, email, and address) which is used to fill customers’ requests.

Surveys & Contests

From time to time, our site requests information from users via surveys or contests. Participation in these surveys or contests is completely voluntary and the may choose whether or not to disclose this information. The requested information typically includes contact information (such as name and postal address), and demographic information (such as postal code). Contact information will be used to notify the winners and award prizes. Survey information will be used for purposes of monitoring or improving the use and satisfaction of this site. Users’ personally identifiable information is not shared with third parties, and will not be used for any other purpose, including marketing and promotion, unless they specifically opt-in.

Newsletter

If a user wishes to subscribe to our newsletter, we ask for contact information such as name and email address. Opt-out instructions are included at the end of each newsletter. Please see the Choice and Opt-out section for more information.

Electronic Postcards and Send to a Friend

If a user elects to send a electronic postcard or use our send to a friend service, we ask them for a friend’s name and email address. Oak Bay Marine Group will automatically send the friend the requested information, but does not use or store the recipient’s personal information for any other purpose.

Cookies

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s computer, and is tied to information about the user. Our cookies are in no way linked to any personally identifiable information. We use session ID cookies to get a better understanding of how users find our site, as well as which pages are most effective. Once the user closes their browser, the cookie is removed.

Log Files

Like most standard web site servers we use log files. Our log files include information related to the browser type, pages viewed, and IP addresses of our users. This information is used to improve the quality of our site by analyzing trends and gathering broad demographic information. This data is not linked to personally identifiable information.

Web Beacons

We may use web beacons in our HTML-based emails to let us know which emails have been opened by the recipients. This allows us to gauge the effectiveness of certain communications and the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns. Information Use

Customer Service

We communicate with users on a regular basis to provide requested services and, in regards to issues relating to their account, we reply via email, fax or phone.

E-mail Newsletter

We send all new members a welcoming email to confirm their subscription, as well as the newsletter. Out of respect for our users’ privacy we provide a way to opt-out of these communications. Please see the Choice and Opt-out section for more information.

Information Requests and Bookings

We subscribe users to our mailing list when they request information by regular mail or book a trip. This list is used to send our Salmon News newspaper and periodic, targeted promotional offers several times per year. Users’ may opt-out of these communications at anytime. Sharing

Legal Disclaimer

Though we make every effort to preserve user privacy, we may need to disclose personal information when required by law wherein we have a good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with a current judicial proceeding, a court order or legal process served on our web site.

Third Party Intermediaries

We use an outside shipping company to ship orders, and a credit card processing company to bill users for goods and services. These companies do not retain, share, store or use personally identifiable information for any secondary purposes, and have been carefully selected to ensure our users’ privacy.

Service Providers

We partner with other third parties to provide specific services. For example, we use an email service provider to distribute our electronic newsletter. When the user signs up for these particular services, we share names, or other contact information that is necessary for the third party to provide these services. These third parties are not allowed to use personally identifiable information except for the purpose of providing these services, and have been carefully selected to ensure our users’ privacy.

Choice and Opt-out

Our users are given the opportunity to "opt-out" of having their information used for purposes not directly related to our site at the point where we ask for information. For example, our information request forms have an "opt-out" mechanism so users who request information from us, but don’t want any marketing material, can keep their email address off of our lists.

Users who no longer wish to receive our email newsletter may opt-out of receiving these communications by following the directions in the message or sending an email message with unsubscribe in the subject line to salmonnews@obmg.com. The user may also contact us at 1-250-598-3366 to opt-out.

Correcting/Updating/Deleting/Deactivating Personal Information

If a user’s personally identifiable information changes (such as postal code, phone, email or postal address), or if a user no longer desires our service, we provide a way to correct, update or delete/deactivate users’ personally identifiable information. This can be done by contacting us by email, telephone or postal mail listed in the Contact Information section.

Notification of Changes

If we change our privacy policy, we will post those changes to this privacy statement and other places we deem appropriate. We will use information in accordance with the privacy policy under which the information was collected.

If, however, we are going to use users’ personally identifiable information in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection, we will notify users via email. Users will have a choice as to whether or not we use their information in this different manner. However, if users have opted out of all communication with the site, or deleted/deactivated their account, then they will not be contacted, nor will their personal information be used in this new manner.
